Brave St. Saturn * Acoustic Stage * July 5th
In the ever-evolving world of music it seems that new genres are born every day. From members of Five Iron Frenzy comes the launch of "astro-rock" - a whole new genre of music - a new project, Brave Saint Saturn! Pushing musical and lyrical boundaries with some of their most experimental and eloquent songwriting ever, Brave Saint Saturn takes a huge stylistic departure from the poppy ska-punk of Five Iron Frenzy. "...Enough of hiding the truth with pretty words and fancy phrases... BSS is honest, real and straight forward." Created by Roper in 1995, Brave Saint Saturn was initially a platform for Roper to express his thoughts on topics traditionally considered dark and emotional. "Lyrically this is definitely the dark side of Five Iron Frenzy," explains Roper. "It is a lot of songs about struggling with the world and tragedy... Ive tried to show the redemption and peace of God through tragic things," he elaborates. "... Overall the lyrics are about hope." Brave Saint Saturn again had a slot on the more usually conservative acoustic stage. Along with the band came hundreds of fans to pack the tent to overflow with standing room only enthusiasm. Brave Saint Saturn pleasantly surprised the remaining "folk crowd" with their musical inventiveness and profiency. |
Pedro The Lion * Encore 1 Stage * July 6th
Though the name was originally affiliated with an earnest band of truth-seekers and storytellers, the incarnation of Pedro the Lion that managed to resonate loudest is also its most quiet likeness. Enter the world of singer/songwriter David Bazan. As a five-piece, Pedro the Lion mustered up enough material to record a mostly-loud EP for Tooth & Nail in 1997 before finally disbanding and reinventing itself as an alias for Bazan's solo songwriting muse. Quickly following up the EP with a full-length album for the venerable Made In Mexico label, Bazan rightfully deconstructed the meaning of the name and attached to it the sense of warmth, vulnerability, and breathy intimacy that inspired SPIN magazine to call it one of the "ten best records you didn't hear" in 1998. After signing with Jade Tree in 1999, Bazan has been steadfastly working on changing his reputation for writing music you wonąt hear: Indeed, "Winners Never Quit" has become his best-selling record to date - and that's no small feat considering the songs piece together the story of a sinful man determined to get to heaven by remaining "uncaught." The follow-up, dubbed "Control" and due out in early 2002, finds Bazan back in a familiar place - alone and in his home studio in Washington with gorgeous results. |
