Claire Holley & Beki Hemingway * Acoustic Stage * July 6th
Claire Holley was born and raised in Mississippi, where she was influenced by honkytonk crooners and gospel choirs in addition to her grandmother's jazz piano. Claire left the south to spend her college years in the Chicago area, where she found herself in an especially vibrant music scene and quickly began performing and writing her own material. Claire has recorded three critically acclaimed albums and continues to tour nationally. Framing her original observations and evocative literate lyrics in bright major-key chord progressions, Claire was joined by close friend Beki Hemingway (This Train) for a warm and intimate set of brilliant country-folk stylings. |
Over The Rhine * Gallery Stage * July 7th
Over the Rhine was formed in the spring of 1989, increasingly showing that they can't help but be true to the peculiar voice that propels them come what may. Their albums are deep and wide, playful and serious, sad and joyfulfull of tiny experiments. The songwriting team that sprouted when the voice of Karin Bergquist and the words of Linford Detweiler first found each other has grown deep roots in the shadow of the Ohio River and branched out far beyond. In the last ten years, Over the Rhine's music has taken the two of them around North America repeatedly, as well as Europe. Over the Rhine has released seven independent recordings and performed alongside a host of notable peers and mentors including Adrian Belew, Shawn Colvin, Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan, Jane Siberry and Bruce Cockburn among others. Plugging away as an indie for more than ten years has finally been rewarded with a mainstream label deal resulting in "Movies For Radio", perhaps their best recording to date. Over The Rhine has been touring constantly promoting their latest record around the world to the critics and fans approval alike. The Cornerstone tradition continued this year with a marathon midnight show to mark the end of yet another great festival. |
